Casey’s eTip: Be Silent for 20 Seconds
Listening attentively, actively and with empathy is a gift to the speaker. Such listening requires silence, too. Give the other your full, relaxed attention as they talk. When they pause, wait. Breathe in and out slowly six times, which translates to about 20 seconds. At some point in that space, the other person will almost always speak. They will almost always go deeper, revealing more about what matters to them so that it can matter to you, too.
