Listening actively begins with full engagement — attending closely to what the speaker says in the moment. Your mind will wander — everyone’s does. You may think of how you’ll reply or about an itch or be distracted by a noise in the hall. What makes listening successful (and productive) is your quick return from distractions, over and over again. (And asking for the speaker to repeat something if the mental detour went on a bit long!)
