Casey’s eTip: Make Videoconferencing Less Draining

Videoconferencing has filled the need for social connection while physically distancing ourselves from others. But even extroverts can find it exhausting. Fortunately, there are ways you can…

Videoconferencing has mediated communication and it can take more energy to navigate it than meeting face-to-face or by phone. There are many reasons: the display changes, technological challenges, and the distraction of our own images on the screen.

You can make the meetings less draining by taking advantage of the affordances of the program you use. In Zoom, for example, you can use Speaker mode, which enlarges the image of the person who is speaking. If someone is set to talk for a while or your conversation is with only one other person, click the upper right corner of that person’s image and “Pin video” so that their image is magnified and yours minimized. Search online for the options available in the program you use.
