Casey’s eTip: Treat Your Anger with Careful Calm
Anger is an energizing mental and emotional state. It alerts us when something important to us has been damaged or is under threat. That’s helpful information.

When we respond by lashing out, venting about the matter to anyone who’ll listen, or mentally reviewing the incident over and over, we keep our body in its high-arousal, threat reaction. We fan the anger’s flames.

It’s more effective to acknowledge the reason for the answer and then consciously activate our parasympathetic nervous system to calm down. Deep breaths with longer exhalations, conscious muscle relaxation, and even some kind self-talk (eventually) clears the mind. You can then choose to respond to the situation in a way that will make yourself proud.
