AI requires vast amounts of resources. It takes 10 times more electricity to run a ChatGPT query than a regular internet search. The water needed is also enormous. In 2023, the first year ChatGPT was widely available, data centers in the USA needed 66 billion liters of water to cool them. That use is projected to grow dramatically. This current approach to AI by Microsoft, Google, ChatGPT and others is unsustainable. How can you use AI responsibly? Be aware of its great costs and apply it conservatively and strategically.
